WAVE/ING

WAVE/ING is a series of video and mixed media installations based on historic and contemporary journeys to Shetland and Iceland. It was exhibited in London Gallery West and the Aberdeen Maritime Museum in 2012, and funded by Arts Council England.

BOUND FOR ICELAND

Bound for Iceland, part of the Wave/ing series, uses asynchronous loops to create changing meanings and relationships. Filmed in Iceland, it is based on the ship’s log of a trawler captain who sailed to Iceland in 1940 after the occupation by British troops.

In November 1940 Alfred Craig, an Aberdeen Trawler Captain, sailed to Iceland with mail for the occupying British troops. He stayed in Iceland for a year. At the same time, the Shetland Bus (small boats) took refugees from Norway to Shetland after the invasion by Nazi Germany in April 1940. These videos and hanging panels are inspired by their journeys and my own travels in 2010. Two other installations are based on the writings of Elizabeth Jane Oswald who travelled in Iceland in the late 19th century.

THE SUBLIME, AND NORTH OF THE FORESTS NORTH OF THE CORN

The Sublime, and North of the Forests North of the Corn are part of the WAVE/ING series. The videos here are the records of the artworks shown at Aberdeen Maritime Museum. The installations are inspired by the writings of Elizabeth Jane Oswald and were filmed in Iceland. They are part of an ongoing body of work that explores fragmented narratives. They use black mirrors or asynchronous loops to reflect the elusive nature of memory.
